The City of New York and the US Justice Department, under the guise of "national security: is refusing to issue a permit for an anti-war march on Saturday, Febnruary 15th. We expect hundreds of thousands to come to New York to express their opposition to Bush's war plans. We urge you/your organization and others to Fax a statement to the Mayor of New York, Bloomberg, urging him to grant a permit. His Fax number is 212 788-2469. We wish to read your statements at a Tuesday am (our time) Press Conference. Please e-mail me amistad.nai@rcn.com or Fax 212 397-2539. I realize it is short notice. Yours in Peace, Alfred Marder Defend the Right to Free Speech: United for Peace and Justice Statement about the February 15 March and Rally For weeks, United For Peace and Justice (UFPJ), a national coalition of several hundred organizations, has been negotiating in good faith with the New York City Police Department in preparation for U.S. participation in the unprecedented global peace demonstration on February 15th - "The World Says No To War." On that day millions of people in more than 300 cities around the world will oppose a U.S. war against Iraq on that day. Hundreds of busloads of demonstrators will be coming to New York from points around the country to join with New Yorkers from all of the city's diverse communities in a rebuke to the Bush administration's threatened bombing and invasion of Iraq.
We contend that the city administration illegally denied us a permit in order to silence our anti-war message. The U.S. Constitution's Bill of Rights prohibits government violation of free speech rights based on "the content of the speech." The coalition suspects that the Bush administration is playing a role in the city's treatment of the protest, given the presence of U.S. Justice Department lawyers at the hearing of the coalition's suit on February 7th. Public opinion is running against the Bush administration's war drive, and they and their allies in NYC have resorted to violating the Constitution in order to silence their opponents. Their actions put into serious question their supposed commitment to democracy, at home or in Iraq. We are determined to exercise our First Amendment rights! On a day when people throughout the entire world will take their stand against a possible catastrophe initiated by our own government, it is outrageous that we are being denied the right to stand freely with them. We demand our right to free speech. With public support, we will prevail. We
call upon the Mayor, the police department and the courts to recognize UFPJ's
right to organize a peaceful and nonviolent march and rally on February 15. We
ask all supporters of the Constitution to let the mayor and police commissioner
know that you uphold our constitutional right to dissent. Dear Mr Bloomberg At Aalborg Peace Action in Denmark we have heard some rumours that the City of New York is refusing to grant a permit for an anti-war march on Saturday, February 15th. We are convinced that this rumour was sent to us as a hoax email, we cannot imagine that you would curb the freedom of speech and take away the peoples right to demonstrate peacefully. That sort of action is taken by the enemies of democracy not the great country of democracy a country that is prepared to go to war for these same principles. We therefore send this fax to support you in your decision to let the demonstration go ahead as indeed demonstrations are going ahead all over the world on that very same day, including here in Aalborg, Denmark. Sincerely Lotte Reimer Aalborg Fredsaktion
